SWIFT Payment Confirmation: What It Proves

Before asking whether a confirmation is genuine, ask what it is confirming.

An instruction, a release advice and a credit are different records

A payment instruction describes what is to be processed. A bank-issued advice may confirm that the bank accepted or released it. A beneficiary account entry records what was credited. Those documents concern related events, but they do not answer the same question.

Read the issuer, document title, date and exact wording. “Generated,” “submitted” and “credited” should not be treated as synonyms. A customer-facing copy may also differ in layout from the message exchanged between institutions.

Find the identifier that connects the conversation

The UETR is the reference to retain when discussing a SWIFT customer payment. It appears in field 121 of an MT103-format document or in the UETR element inside pacs.008 payment identification.

Other references may identify a message or a customer instruction. Use our MT103 field guide or pacs.008 guide to locate the relevant field. Checking its format cannot establish who created the document.

Verify through a channel you already trust

If you need to rely on a document, ask the bank or the sender to obtain confirmation through official banking channels. Do not use a phone number printed on an unfamiliar attachment as the sole verification route.

As the receiver, check your own account and ask your bank about the incoming payment. A logo, stamp, reference or polished PDF can be copied. Visual appearance alone is weak evidence.

Look for confirmation of the account outcome

Bank status reports can describe processing, a settlement step or creditor-account settlement. Ask the reporting bank what its code means for the actual account. A rejection report is also separate from a completed return.

SWIFT’s universal-confirmations information distinguishes outcome reporting from the original instruction. Use the status decoder for terminology, then confirm the specific result with the bank.

Where a website timeline fits

A UETR.io timeline displays information registered with this service. It is not a bank-issued receipt, a live SWIFT gpi report or a guarantee that the recipient can use funds. Exporting or photographing the page does not change that boundary.

If a confirmation says the payment was sent but the recipient sees nothing, use the missing-transfer checklist to prepare a focused enquiry rather than treating either screen as the whole story.
