What is a UETR number? The 36-characterSWIFT identifier explained.
A UETR (Unique End-to-end Transaction Reference) is the 36-character tracking code used to identify a payment across its message journey. It gives the sender, receiver and banks a consistent way to refer to the same transaction.
Think of it as the payment’s reference label. It helps connect the record across systems, but does not by itself prove submission, settlement or receipt of funds.
- Always 36 characters. Five groups separated by hyphens.
- Stays with the transaction. A reference for the same payment along its journey.
- Different from an account number. A UETR identifies a transaction, not a bank account.

What does UETR mean?
UETR means Unique End-to-end Transaction Reference. It is the identifier used to keep a payment recognizable across its message journey. The sending institution assigns it, and it remains associated with that transaction through the payment chain.
What is a UETR code?
A UETR code is the same thing as a UETR number or UETR reference. Banks, corporate portals and payment confirmations may use different labels for the same identifier.
Despite the word “number”, it contains both letters and digits. Its hyphenated UUID format helps distinguish it from a bank’s SWIFT/BIC code, an account number or a payment reference.
When asking about a transfer, provide the original UETR together with the amount, date and relevant bank-issued confirmation.

How do I check a UETR status?
Keep your original reference and payment information together. Follow our guide to tracking a transaction by UETR. Use a bank or tracking service that has access to the relevant record.
Copy the UETR
Take the full 36-character identifier from the original transaction message or confirmation.
Paste it into the tracker
On UETR.io, add the message date and your email to find a registered transaction.
Read the latest details
Review recorded events and confirm the financial outcome with the bank handling the payment.
UETR vs TRN vs BIC vs IBAN
These identifiers serve different purposes. They are not interchangeable.
| Identifier | What it identifies | Length / format | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| UETR | A single transaction end to end | 36-character UUID | Payment journey |
| TRN / payment reference | An issuer’s payment reference | Varies by system | Issuer or bank record |
| BIC / SWIFT code | A financial institution | 8 or 11 characters | Bank identification |
| IBAN | A bank account | Country-specific, up to 34 characters | Account identification |

Cross-border payments can involve several institutions, each with its own internal references. A consistent end-to-end reference keeps conversations about the same transaction.
For a sender or receiver asking about a delayed payment, this reduces ambiguity. Bank support can use the UETR alongside other payment details when investigating a query.
The identifier itself does not show where money is, who holds it or whether it has arrived. That information depends on the records available to the bank or tracking service.
UETR.io displays registered transaction events. It does not currently query the live SWIFT gpi network. Your bank remains the source for confirmation of submission, settlement and credit.

How does a UETR work?
What it looks like, where you find it, how it travels with the transfer, and how to recognize a fake.
↗ What a UETR looks like
A UETR has 36 characters and five groups. It uses a UUID v4 structure with hexadecimal letters and numbers. A format check helps detect typing mistakes.
↗ Where the UETR sits in the bank’s document
On an MT103, look for field 121 in block 3. In a pacs.008 message, look for the UETR element within the payment identification details. Your document layout may differ.
↗ How the UETR travels
The reference identifies the same payment across its message journey. Intermediaries can have their own internal identifiers while using the UETR to connect the end-to-end transaction.
↗ How to recognize a fake or wrong UETR
A valid-looking reference is not proof of a real payment. Confirm it against the original documentation, ask the bank for an update and verify any expected funds through your own account.
One UETR, All the Way
The reference connects the transaction across its journey.
Where do I find my UETR number?
Your bank or transaction provider can help locate the reference. Here are practical places to start.
Look on the transfer confirmation
Open the original payment message or receipt. Search for UETR, unique end-to-end reference or field 121.
Check your banking portal
Open the payment details or download the confirmation. Some banks include the reference in an expanded details view.
Simply ask your bank
Give support the payment date, amount and recipient information. Ask specifically for the original UETR.
Check it matches, then trace the transfer
Copy the reference exactly and confirm it belongs to your payment. Ask the responsible bank to investigate a delay or explain the latest reported outcome.
Use the original reference and message date to find your registered transaction.
