ACH vs wire transfer
The difference between ACH and a wire transfer comes down to timing, fees and settlement rules. Standard US ACH is often a low-cost choice for routine payments. A domestic wire can suit an urgent payment when the bank’s cut-off and fees work for you.
For international payments, compare the routes your bank supports for the countries, currencies and recipients involved.
- Different payment rails: ACH uses scheduled processing; wire systems settle individual payments.
- Recovery rules differ: ACH returns are conditional, and wire recalls are not guaranteed.
- Keep the original reference: SWIFT customer payments carry a UETR for bank enquiries.
ACH vs wire transfer at a glance
Compare the service your bank actually offers, not just the name on its transfer button.
Routine and low-cost
Useful for payroll, bills and recurring US payments. Timing depends on standard or same-day processing and the bank’s availability rules.
Urgent and individually settled
A domestic wire can settle on the same business day. Verify fees, cut-offs and recipient details before authorizing it.
Two rails built for two different jobs
ACH and wires both move funds electronically, which is why the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Their processing rules, information requirements and recovery options differ.
What is an ACH transfer?
ACH stands for Automated Clearing House. The US network supports credits, such as payroll deposits, and authorized debits, such as recurring bills. It processes through scheduled settlement windows. Nacha’s ACH overview explains the network and its common uses.
What is a wire transfer?
A wire is a bank credit transfer. US dollar wires can settle through systems such as Fedwire. Banks may use SWIFT messages for international instructions, with settlement handled through their banking arrangements.
The international message and the money’s settlement are related but distinct. Read our pacs.008 guide and wire-transfer timing guide for that part of the journey.

What is the difference between ACH and a wire transfer?
The differences below describe common services. Your bank’s terms determine the actual fees, limits and timing.
| Feature | ACH transfer | Wire transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Usually 1–3 business days; Same Day ACH is available for eligible entries | Domestic wires can settle on the same business day before the cut-off |
| Cost to send | Often low-cost or free for routine consumer transfers | Typically a per-payment fee; international payments may add FX and intermediary costs |
| Returns and recovery | Returns, disputes and limited reversals follow specific rules | Settlement can be final; a recall request does not guarantee recovery |
| Direction | Credits and authorized debits | Credit transfers |
| Reach | US domestic ACH; separate international ACH arrangements also exist | Domestic wire services and bank-supported international routes |
| Settlement | Scheduled processing and settlement windows | Individual settlement through the applicable wire system |
| Limits | Bank-set limits; eligible Same Day ACH entries have a network limit | Bank, service and channel limits apply |
| Details required | The bank’s ACH routing instructions and the recipient’s account details | Wire-specific routing, account and party details; international requirements vary |
| Tracking | Ask the bank about its trace number and payment status | Ask for the bank’s confirmation; SWIFT customer payments carry a UETR |
| Common use | Payroll, bills, recurring and routine US payments | Urgent, high-value or supported cross-border payments |
ACH vs Fedwire vs SWIFT: which rail is which?
A clearing network, a settlement service and a messaging network do different jobs.
| Rail | What it is | Timing | Reach | Tracking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic ACH | US clearing network using scheduled settlement windows | Standard or same-day options | US domestic | Bank trace and status |
| Fedwire | Federal Reserve real-time gross settlement service | During its operating hours | US dollar wire settlement | Ask the bank for available reports |
| SWIFT | Financial messaging network used by banks | Depends on the entire payment route | International bank connectivity | Original UETR and bank reports |
ACH vs Fedwire
ACH processes payments in scheduled windows. Fedwire settles individual transfers during its operating day. The bank’s submission deadline can be earlier than the settlement service’s deadline.
Use the bank’s wire-specific instructions. An ACH routing number and a wire routing number should not be assumed interchangeable.
ACH vs SWIFT
SWIFT carries financial messages rather than serving as an ACH clearing system. Cross-border settlement depends on the banks and currency route.
The 36-character UETR identifies the transaction. Ask the sending bank for it when requesting a payment trace.
Is ACH the same as a wire transfer?
No. Both are electronic transfers, but they use different systems and service rules.
Is ACH or a wire faster?
A domestic wire may suit an urgent payment before the bank’s cut-off. Same Day ACH can also settle eligible payments on the same banking day, but through scheduled windows.
Is ACH cheaper than a wire?
Routine ACH often has lower fees. Compare the actual fee schedule, account plan and service option rather than assuming either route is free.
Which is safer?
Verify the recipient and instructions for either method. ACH returns, dispute rights and reversals depend on the transaction and applicable rules. A wire recall is not a recovery guarantee.
Are the routing numbers the same?
Not necessarily. Obtain instructions specifically for the route you intend to use. Verify changed payment details using a trusted contact method.

How to send an ACH transfer or a wire
Use your bank’s official secure channel and verify the recipient’s instructions.
How to send an ACH transfer
- Obtain the correct ACH routing and account details.
- Use the bank’s ACH or external-transfer service and obtain authorization where required.
- Select an eligible processing option and review fees, limits and deadlines.
- Retain the confirmation and ask the bank about status or errors.
How to send a wire transfer
- Obtain wire-specific routing, account and party information.
- Confirm currency, fees, cut-off and expected delivery with the bank.
- Verify instructions independently, especially after any requested change.
- Retain the bank-issued confirmation and original transaction reference.
ACH and wire transfer fees: what each costs
Cost depends on the bank, account plan, channel and payment route. The categories below are comparisons, not live quotes.
For an international transfer, compare the amount the beneficiary is expected to receive after conversion and possible intermediary or receiving-bank charges. A low advertised sending fee does not necessarily mean the lowest total cost.
Ask whether charges are deducted from the payment or paid separately. Confirm the price with the provider before authorizing.
What about Same Day ACH?
Eligible entries can settle during same-day windows when submitted before the applicable deadline. The published per-entry limit is $1 million; banks can apply lower customer limits. Check the current Federal Reserve Same Day ACH guidance.
Same Day ACH is not the same as an always-on instant service. Confirm when the recipient can use the funds.
How ACH and wires fit among US payment rails
Electronic funds transfer, or EFT, is a broad description rather than one payment rail. ACH, wires, card payments and instant services have their own rules.
Instant-payment services such as FedNow and RTP differ from standard ACH and traditional wire windows. Availability and limits depend on the bank. Do not assume a payment app provides the same recovery rights as an ACH transaction.
| Service | Processing | Cost | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic ACH | Standard or same-day windows | Often lower | Payroll, bills and recurring |
| Domestic wire | Individual settlement during operating hours | Bank-set fees | Urgent or high-value payments |
| Bank payment app | Service-specific | Provider-specific | Eligible person-to-person payments |
| FedNow / RTP | Instant-payment services | Bank-set pricing | Supported real-time bank payments |

For a SWIFT customer payment, retain the original UETR and bank confirmation. UETR.io can display a transaction registered with its system; it does not query the live SWIFT gpi network. Read our transaction tracking guide and SWIFT status-code reference.
