CORRECT THE INSTRUCTION SAFELY

Wrong IBAN or Beneficiary Details: What to Do

The right action depends on whether the instruction is still editable, already released or associated with suspected fraud.

Before submission: verify the receiving instructions

Compare the account identifier, beneficiary name, bank details and required currency with instructions obtained through a trusted channel. If a supplier changes its bank account by email, verify the change with a previously known contact before updating a saved payee.

A structural IBAN check cannot prove account ownership or that an account is open. Where the bank offers a name-check result, read any mismatch warning and resolve it instead of treating it as a formality. See HSBC UK’s guidance on transfer mistakes for one bank’s process; its local timelines are not universal international-wire deadlines.

After submission: contact the sending bank promptly

Tell the bank exactly which original field is wrong and supply the correct information through its secure channel. Ask whether the instruction can still be cancelled or amended before release. Keep the original confirmation instead of altering it to resemble the corrected order.

Updating a saved beneficiary does not necessarily update a payment already submitted. Ask the bank to confirm what happened to that specific instruction, with a case number and time.

If it has already left the bank

The bank may need to seek an amendment, return or recall through other institutions. The available route depends on the error and processing stage. A name discrepancy, invalid account and valid account belonging to someone else can have different consequences.

Do not rely on a prediction that every wrong account “automatically bounces”. Ask what the bank has established. Its recall request may require cooperation and does not guarantee recovery.

Keep the original and the correction connected

  • Original UETR, bank reference, amount and currency.
  • The exact information submitted and the correction requested.
  • When the error was discovered and reported.
  • The bank’s action, case number, fees and next update date.

If a return is reported, confirm the account recredit separately. If a new payment is necessary, ask how the bank has ruled out duplicate processing of the original.

If the details were changed by someone else

Report suspected fraud immediately through the bank’s official fraud channel. Preserve the messages containing the changed instructions. This is more urgent than an ordinary spelling correction.

Do not send more money to a stranger who offers to recover it. Read payment safety and scam awareness and use the relevant reporting channels for your country. UETR.io cannot amend bank instructions or recover funds.
