ISO 20022 Address Requirements: Deadline Update
SWIFT has deferred the November 2026 structured-address deadline. An update on revised timing and approach is expected by December 2026 at the latest. Continue preparing separate town and country fields and confirm what your bank requires.
Understand the address formats, the timetable update and practical steps for international payments.
- Prepare your data: keep town name and country in dedicated fields.
- Available formats: fully structured and hybrid addresses.
- Cutover deferred: the planned removal of unstructured addresses has been extended.
The address deadline at a glance

SWIFT’s August 2026 extension announcement changes the timetable. The December timing refers to a further announcement, not a replacement implementation deadline.
When is ISO 20022 mandatory?
The CBPR+ move from legacy MT payment instructions to ISO 20022 and the postal-address changes are separate steps. Extending the address timetable does not reverse the message-format migration.
Continue improving address quality in your records and confirm the formats supported by your bank.
The planned November 2026 address cutover has been deferred. SWIFT is consulting on revised timing and approach.
An update is due by December 2026 at the latest. Confirm your bank’s own preparation schedule. Dates for other Standards Release changes must not be treated as a confirmed address deadline.
The address migration timeline
Separate the message migration from the address preparation schedule.
Migration begins
CBPR+ ISO 20022 transition starts.
Message migration
Coexistence ends for applicable customer-payment instructions.
Address extension
SWIFT announces additional preparation time.
Timing update due
Revised timing and approach to be announced.
What is the ISO 20022 address format?
Three address layouts help explain the transition.
A fully structured address places each component in a dedicated element. Street, building number, postcode, town and country can be identified individually instead of inferred from free text.
A hybrid address uses dedicated town and country fields alongside free-text address lines for the remaining details.
An unstructured address provides the address in free-text lines. Its planned removal has been deferred.
Use SWIFT’s address-format guidance for the formats and the extension announcement for the timetable. Confirm the requirements for your own bank’s channel.
Structured vs hybrid vs unstructured
The same illustrative address, represented in three ways.
Unstructured
Free-text address lines
<AdrLine>55 Example Street</AdrLine> <AdrLine>London, GB</AdrLine>
Town and country are embedded in the text.
Hybrid
Town + country structured
<TwnNm>London</TwnNm> <Ctry>GB</Ctry> <AdrLine>55 Example Street</AdrLine>
Separate town and country with free-text lines for other components.
Fully structured
Every component identified
<StrtNm>Example Street</StrtNm> <BldgNb>55</BldgNb> <TwnNm>London</TwnNm> <Ctry>GB</Ctry>
Dedicated elements replace free-text address lines.
What this means when you send or receive a transfer
The practical effects apply to payment details and saved beneficiary records.
01/ Confirm your details with your bank
Review your address and saved beneficiaries. Supply town and country separately when requested, and check whether any additional information is needed.
02/ Check your payment templates
Review online banking forms and saved templates. Ask your bank whether a beneficiary stored as one free-text address needs updating.
03/ Where a failed payment shows up
Missing details can lead to repairs or rejection. An empty tracking result does not establish an address failure. Ask the sending bank to identify the cause and next step.
04/ The tracking reference does not change
Address components and the 36-character UETR serve different purposes. Retain the original reference when discussing the same payment.
▤ How businesses should prepare
Start with the systems holding customer and supplier addresses.
Audit the addresses you store
Review supplier, customer and beneficiary records. Identify missing town and country information and confirm it with the relevant party.
Capture town and country as fields
Update forms and ERP or accounting-system records so these components are stored separately. Preserve accurate address information rather than guessing from text.
Ask your bank what its channel expects
Confirm whether your portal, file upload or API accepts structured or hybrid addresses and which fields it requires.
Validate addresses with your bank
Test sample exports using the bank’s available facilities. Agree a preparation schedule and resolve formatting gaps before a payment is urgent.
Review SWIFT’s structured and hybrid address guidance with your bank. Payment systems and channels may have different schedules; verify each one rather than assuming a single worldwide cutover date.
♧ Why addresses are being structured
Consistent address components make party information easier to interpret. A clear distinction between street, town and country can reduce ambiguity during payment checks.
Accurate data supports screening and automated processing. Improve address quality while the timetable is revised, and keep your bank’s channel-specific requirements in view.
